Choosing your forest experience

Less rushing.
More presence.

A gorilla encounter starts long before you reach the forest. Your chosen activity, available permit, trekking sector, and accommodation should be planned together.

Private travel arrangements do not make the park encounter exclusive. Wildlife activities follow Uganda Wildlife Authority rules and may be shared with other permitted visitors.

Plan a gorilla journey

Gorilla trekking or habituation?

Uganda Wildlife Authority distinguishes standard tracking from habituation experiences. Its published guidelines set a maximum observation period of one hour for standard tracking and four hours for habituation experiences. These are viewing limits, rather than total outing durations.

Build the itinerary around the permit

Bwindi has four principal trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. They should not be treated as interchangeable when choosing a lodge. Confirm the activity and sector first, then map the transfer and accommodation around that location.

Allow a night nearby before your scheduled activity. Avoid relying on a same-day flight arrival to make a forest briefing, and leave room for weather and operational changes in your wider itinerary.

Prepare for the forest

  • Discuss fitness and mobility needs before choosing the activity.
  • Pack footwear with grip, weather protection, and a small day bag.
  • Follow the ranger’s instructions and current wildlife health protocols.
  • Reconfirm eligibility rules, permit details, and cancellation conditions before payment.
How long does a gorilla trek take?

The total outing varies with the gorillas’ location and forest conditions. UWA describes treks as potentially lasting two to seven hours; the standard observation limit is separate. Keep the day flexible.

Is a private safari a private gorilla encounter?

No. You can arrange private transfers and accommodation while the wildlife activity follows the authority’s permitted group arrangements. Any special arrangements must be explicitly confirmed.

Can I combine Bwindi with a safari?

Yes. The proposed five-day Bwindi and Ishasha itinerary is one starting point. Its feasibility depends on permits, flights, lodge availability, and your travel dates.
